Bloglomerates | They are forming, are clouds of war approaching?

“Bloglomerates”  As told to me by RyanA (his thoughts here). The following are my own thoughts on the word and what it means.

I may have mentioned this before but I have a very active imagination. I treat it as a special gift. The title of this post is somewhat misleading as to what I actually think of bloglomerates but it painted a cool picture in my mind.

Imagine a world where writers control mankind. Not through magical words but in great literary battles that are fought between the great corporate writing bloglomerates. Their clashes shaping and moulding the world around them and changing the opinions and thoughts of those who read their words. I keep imagining some sort of anime done by BONES on the subject. Bloglomerates would rise and fall, new alliances and friendships and new enemies would be found in each clash. Those destroyed by the power of other’s words or the lack of any will to fight themselves, would disappear off into.. wherever.. obscurity would be good. I think that would make an awesome show.. or at least some sort of narrated art book ;D!

Anywho my actual opinion on bloglomerates isn’t that of fear or as seeing them as fighting and squabbling groups. I actually think they are a sign of the progress and friendship that is formed in our greater community. We have a few bloglomerates of late and there is two types from what I can see. The first type of bloglomerate could be defined as “self-contained”. They are self-contained in the sense that they have a single focal point to represent themselves. The writers for these bloglomerates may have their own blogs but they choose to post either in parallel or dedicate more to the bloglomerate headquarters. Below is a list of some of the bloglomerates that I know of and follow…

Are-are

Heterochromia

Oi, Hayaku!

THAT Animeblog

The Scrumptious Anime Blog

Yukan Blog!

㊥出し

These bloglomerates are great places to get regular written food for the mind. They are composed of multiple authors who usually post on different topics thus allowing you to enjoy a wide range of topics. These are the first type of bloglomerates and probably the more obvious. Because of the amount of content that the bloglomerate sites generate a lot of people will follow the bloglomerates in herds. HERDS I TELL YOU. Followers of a bloglomerate may end up joining the group or even forming their own bloglomerate.

There is however a second type of bloglomerate. This type may be composed of different multi-author or single author blogs that work in harmony to reach certain goals. They could be involved in projects together that are for the community or they could be friends who regularly work together to create posts or events.

This second type of bloglomerate could be classed as more creative or innovative. They are more likely to make things that aren’t in the norm or that are new and exciting. They are not confined to writing to a particular schedule or to particular guidelines and are more likely to develop ideas that they come up with.

I would like to think that mellowSPACE is part of a bloglomerate that combines with one or two other bloggers. We work together behind the scenes trying to bring new things to the community and in that sense we have more then just a common purpose or goal. We actively work together to make these things happen. I guess the one thing we lack is perhaps an outward unity which is visible through writing collaborations or similar.

What is your take on bloglomerates? Do you agree with how I have portrayed them? Would you place yourself in a bloglomerate? Could you envisage a more formal arrangement for bloglomerates such as an index?

Edit: I for some reason was not aware that Random Curiosity is multi-author. I’d say that RandomC is deifintely a self-contained bloglomerate that has quite far-reaching influence.

    I gotta agree.
Though I don’t go to any of those blogs.
About the only one I go to is random curiosity.
    Thats it.

I visit quite a few of these team blogs, which I prefer to call them by. But yesh, your bloglomerate idea would apply probably to Team Blue, but we are not in actuality one, though we do expand to global as well as writing on same things and events and coverage at times. I hope to expand the ideas and stuff we write about in the future too, through blog authors with similar interests and may want to write episodics, combined ones through different blogs, on anime, and other stuff.

There are quite a few that I visit and the power that they mostly have lies in being able to keep up a high level of output without burning out, which is the biggest obstacle most bloggers will face at some point.

I also foresee an anime version of reddit or digg sometime in the near future as a way to reward article writers and get them on the map. A site such as that may have the ability to break the canvassing power of bloglomerates and bring more exposure to individual bloggers.

@zzeroparticle: It’s funny you should mention the digg idea because I actually tried a php script in order to do that. I didn’t have the time to actually get it going and I wasn’t sure how much support it would gather. But i’d be willing to deploy it again with some advice on the bare minimum features needed.

I think your portrayal is spot on. I visit several of the first type but I find that I only like 1 or 2 of the writers. It’s not to say that the other writers are bad writers, it’s just that they generally don’t cover stuff I’m interested in. I wonder how many others feel the same - they’re really only visiting 1 or 2 writers each time.

I find it funny that due to misinterpretation by some, OH! is getting turned into something I never intended in the heads of people around the otakusphere.

If only you knew the books I’ve written to my authors explaining just wtf is going on and why it’s going on the way it is, and etc. I know RyanA seems concerned about editors and etc, but just because I didn’t mention those things in a post calling for authors doesn’t mean I don’t have that already sorted out.

I don’t mean to rant, more than anything I’d like to thank you for your continuing support as OH! gears up for launch and for being as excited about what’s going on even without the books full of details.

I’d dig it if you felt like adding me to an IM program of some sort…maybe shoot an email to me over at the site and I’d be thrilled to chat with you about the blood and sweat going into OH! Hell, you might have some great ideas you can’t put the time into that we might be able to pull off or something, who knows?

A blogomerate, eh? That sounds a whole lot cooler than my site actually is q_q
And what is this misinformation about me cosplaying? D:

Will you be my Bloglomerate forever and ever? lols

@Vendetta: Yeah I used to not follow any blogs at all despite having my own.. now I find myself constantly surfing blogs.

@Panther: I know they on the outside seem like just team blogs and i’m sure i’m not going to mould people to see them all as different. But ah yeah I dunno I think RyanA did a better job of explaining. Although it may be a team blog… it is more organised… much more organised.

@zzeroparticle: So true man, burnout can be thwarted with a multi-author blog and in that sense for a lot of writers perhaps it is a better choice then going it alone. Indeed most likely a better choice for many who are beginning (note.. mellowSPACE is hiring lol).

@Caitlin you raise a good point, I do find myself checking blogs at certain times of the day only and that alone probably trims down the scope of those who I read.

@oihayaku: Lol btw.. I know who you are DUN DUN DUN. I’m excited as hell to see OH! launch man it’s gonna be cool and mSPACE is definitely keen to perhaps work on something in the future ^^! I’m on skype and msn if you want to chat shoot me an email at mellow@mellowspace.com

@Nagato: Lol I don’t know enough about your blog workings to say whether it is actually a bloglomerate but yeah lol. ALSO cosplaying .. i’m not sure.. I might have heard something on IRC.

    @blissmo: <3 4 EVA & EVA I AM YOURS.

Cool post you got here, but I never got to the idea of competing with other blogs. They’re gonna bite my arm with shear will, that’s what I imagine.

Oh cool! That’s my post in the images… I feel so loved. Ahem, pretend you didn’t read that.

@Rakuen: Thanks xD! Yeah competing is interesting.. i’m interested to see what will happen in the next wee while.

;D! I SAWW IT HAHAHAA. Yes. It was just by chance but yeah hoho.
